Alvino Rey

Big Band Leader

"Ultra-Lounge" Steel Guitarist

Alvino Rey, one of the "fathers" of the Pedal Steel Guitar in the 30's and 40's, was an influential and reknowned Big Band leader. His work in the 50's and60's was notable for hot horn charts with Alvino's patented "I'll just strum this absolutely correct 'wierd' chord and slide it around a bit, 'cause it's MY band" steel guitar punctuations... neat stuff! The album pictured above is one of the coolest examples I know of.

His work also influenced Juan Garcia ESQUIVEL! the notorious Latino arranger of Whacky Stereo Pop; Esquivel! used Alvino Rey as a featured player (though seemingly mostly as a sound effect) out of respect for Alvino's contributions to Big Band music, .

Recent re-discovery by the martinis and bikinis crowd- "Lounge" or "Space Age Bachelor Pad" movement, has prompted CD compilations of wierd Pop from the 50's and 60's on both major and obscure lables, which include Alvino's band on occasion, and Alvino as a featured player with Esquivel!.
