Buck, Tom Brumley (with hair!) |
In the early 1960's, while Nashville was perfecting the "Countrypolitan" sound, with lush strings and vocal chorales (a counterpart to the wimpiness that dominated the Pre-Beatles pop charts) Buck Owens and his Buckaroos in Bakersfield, California found chart success by picking honky tonk music stripped to the basics. By drawing a parallel to the Beatles' revitalization of Rock 'n' Roll in the face of schlock like Fabian and Paul Anka records, and the fact that of contemporary C&W the Beatles chose Buck's "Act Naturally " as a cover tune, one comes up with the title concept for this rant - That Bakersfield Sound... The Honky Tonk "Mersey Beat"
