EDDIE STUBBS

WSM's Newest Opry Announcer

keeps the Honky Tonk flame BURNING!

Eddie Stubbs, fiddler for the Grammy nominated Johnson Mountain Boys bluegrass band, Kitty Wells (The UNDISPUTED Queen of Country Music.) and others has for several years also had a Weekend afternoon radio show (formerly on Sunday, now on Saturday) on WAMU Public Radio from American University in Washington DC on which he features "the best in Traditional, Bluegrass and HONKY TONK music for your listening pleasure." His self-taught knowledge of the pickers, front folk and recordings of the era from the late 40's into the '60's is unequalled in radio today. He has parlayed this knowledge and his radio skills into the most fitting vocation I can imagine - he is now WSM's Grand Ole Opry (R) Announcer, following the traditions of the late Grant Turner and "Solemn Ole Judge" George D. Hay! Eddie also now has a Saturday morning slot on WSM where he spins the "deep catalog" honky tonk for Nashville's music hungry. His listeners reputedly include George Jones, Bill Anderson, and other creators of "the classics," thus "bringing it full-circle!"

I have been a long time Eddie Stubbs fan. He is one of the most gracious and mannerly gentlemen I have ever met. His scholarly approach to "hillbilly" music and his stentorian yet down home delivery make him a radio treasure.

His show helped me better understand the transitional period from lap steel to pedal steel, by putting recordings into a chronological context, and by highlighting the pickers as well as the front persons.

At his Thirty-Something age you would not imagine that he could have lived enough to know what he does!
