"Thumbs" Carlisle - played regular guitar with his axe in his lap like a lap steel, way before Jeff Healy was a gleam in his Pappa's eye. A remarkable picker, playing cool melodic, jazz influenced country styles. Played on several albums with steeler Herbie Wallace. I got to hear him live with Buddy Emmons at a steel show in Pennsylvania back in the early 80's and was surprised at his unorthodox technique, but very glad to hear his great music! He also enlivened the proceedings with muttered one-liners that kept cracking Emmons up, like a C&W Henny Youngman. A guitarist friend of mine told me some stories about Thumbs at a party in Vegas my friend attended, with Thumbs sitting around playing and cracking jokes all night... wish I could've been a fly on the wall.
